A Toronto based non-profit organization called Building Up has recently partnered with Raising the Roof to sell toques to raise money for homelessness prevention across Canada.

Building Up is an Employment Social Enterprise that trains resilient Torontonians in need to build, renovate, and retrofit Affordable Housing in the GTA.

The organization was developed to improve the city’s environmental efficiency, affordable housing stock, and to create a real pathway for individuals experiencing barriers to enter careers in trades. So not only is it helping the community, but also helping individuals learn the trade and find work.

Raising the Roof is also very involved in the fight against homelessness, and sells toques each year across the country to raise money. So, Building Up has collaborated with Raising the Roof to help sell these toques to an even larger audience.

Today is Toque Tuesday, and the organizations are aiming to sell 5,000 hats throughout Canada.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, we have unfortunately experienced many organizations having to hit the pause button on business temporarily or in some cases, permanently. An organization that is thankfully continuing its work is The Shoebox Project.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because the organization is heavily promoted online during the holiday season. Plus, one of its founders is well known Canadian stylist, Jessica Mulroney who continues to share information on her social media.

Although the Shoebox Project has announced recently it’s not collecting shoeboxes this spring due to the challenges of our current situation, the organization has committed to donating $50,000 instead.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-P8IuLhNfN/

This amazing amount of money will go to women’s shelters across Canada to help with the urgent needs those living there are facing.

The Shoebox Project was founded in 2011 by sisters-in-law, Jessica, Caroline, Vanessa, and Katy Mulroney. The four of them noticed that there were many opportunities around the holidays to give to folks in need, but there weren’t many solely dedicated to helping women.

Since its launch, the organization has delivered 245,000 shoeboxes to women shelters, which together are valued at over 12 million dollars.

Each shoebox contains items with a total value of $50. These items are geared towards anything that would assist in helping women feel more confident and beautiful like makeup, skincare products, haircare essentials, and more.

The organization now has around 70 volunteer-run local chapters across Canada and the United States.

The organization’s volunteers collect and distribute these shoeboxes that are lovingly filled and gifted to local women shelters.

With the boxes you make personally being delivered to areas in your very own community, it allows you to really feel like you’re making a difference for people so close to home. The main focus of this movement is to show women, who may be struggling on their own or feel neglected, that they are loved and definitely not forgotten.

Even though The Shoebox Project may not be collecting boxes right now, you can still join the organization in helping women shelters through a monetary donation.

Canadian Tire Has Donated $5 Million To COVID-19 Relief

While many of us are quite lucky to be hunkering down at home during this worldwide quarantine, some folks don’t have that same luxury. It’s been so beautiful to see how brands across the world and right here at home have come together to do what they can for healthcare workers, frontline workers, and the community. To help out during these unprecedented times, H&M Canada has partnered with Women’s Shelters Canada to do its part.

The retailer has just announced that through Women’s Shelters Canada, it’ll provide 20,000 garments across the country.

It’s an unfortunate reality, but domestic violence is increasing significantly and this generous donation will help those who are vulnerable. The product donation will include a mix of clothing for women and children ranging in sizes.

In addition to this major donation, H&M has also taken steps to help in the fight against COVID-19.

In March, the retailer quickly jumped into action by arranging for its supply chain to start producing personal protective equipment (PPE) that would be given to hospitals for healthcare workers around the world.

The Coronavirus is dramatically affecting each and every one of us, and H&M Group is, like many other organisations, trying our best to help in this extraordinary situation. We see this is as a first step in our efforts to support in any way we can. We are all in this together, and have to approach this as collectively as possible,” said Anna Gedda, Head of Sustainability H&M Group in a release.

And if that’s not enough, H&M also made a donation of $500,000 to the WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.

Even though we’re currently going through these unprecedented times, it’s been so heartwarming to see brands and companies pull together to do whatever they can to help. Some are manufacturing hand sanitizer, scrub caps, donating money, products, and even food to frontline workers and food banks. One brand that’s joining in the fight is beloved Canadian brand Roots.

Roots has just announced that it’s donating $500,000 in products to healthcare workers as well as repurposing its factories to produce non-medical, reusable masks.

“Supporting the communities where we live, work and do business has been at the heart of what we do for more than four decades,” said Meghan Roach, Interim Chief Executive officer in a release.

“In these unprecedented times, we are giving back in the best way we can, through the comfort of our products and by leveraging our Canadian design and manufacturing capabilities. We are proud to be doing our part to support the amazing Canadian frontline healthcare workers who are sacrificing so much and working tirelessly through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The brand has also started to manufacture Non-medical grade masks at its Toronto-based leather factory.

These masks will be in accordance with all of the appropriate health and safety guidelines and the whole point is to offset the shortage of medical masks that are needed for frontline healthcare workers.

According to the brand, its first round of production of these masks sold out within hours. Plus, in addition to creating these non-medical masks, Roots is also donating 3,000 medical masks to organizations.

Face masks have quickly become one of the most popular items around due to the current COVID-19 situation we’re all going through. It’s been recommended by the CDC that we cover our faces everytime we go outside to help ourselves, and the public, safe.

If you’re looking to buy a mask, it’s important to be mindful to not buy ones that are hospital-grade so that we don’t take from healthcare workers who need them the most. That’s why we’re so excited to share a handful of designer brands who are creating face masks for you to wear, but some have even implemented social programs so that those on the front line or those in need are getting help and protection as well.

Here are 10 designer brands that are making face masks and giving back.

It’s no secret that COVID-19 has disrupted the daily lives of people all over the world. It’s even harder for folks who are hospitalized and their families because hospitals aren’t allowing any visitors due to the possibility of infection. To help those hospitalized stay in touch with their families, TELUS has made an extremely generous donation to help.

The telecommunications giant has donated 10,000 smartphones to organizations and hospitals across the country.

“The TELUS team is deeply committed to keeping our country’s most vulnerable citizens safe and connected during this health emergency,” said Darren Entwistle, president and CEO of TELUS, in a release.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_N4r9UgIOq/

Many COVID-19 patients don’t have mobile devices so this will help them stay in touch and feel less alone while in the hospital.

The smartphones come with a $0 rate, including 3GB of data and unlimited nationwide talk and text per month.

The donated phones have already started arriving at Toronto’s Mt. Sinai Hospital. In addition to patients staying in touch with their families, the smartphones also allow for hospital workers to communicate without the threat of infection.

Plus, if a patient is intubated or are unable to talk, they can still hear and see their loved ones through the device.

“This will provide solace for the family especially, and staff who are watching people die alone, unable to comfort them,” said Dr. Allan Detsky CM, former physician in chief at Mount Sinai Hospital.

This isn’t all that TELUS is doing to help with the current COVID-19 pandemic either.

The company is spending $10 million to purchase new medical equipment for hospitals, including ventilators. If that’s not enough, it’s increased support to food banks, outreach to isolated seniors, virtual education programs, and mental health initiatives. Plus, its CEO and President Darren Entwistle has donated his whole 2020 salary to the cause.

According to Daily Hive, in 2018 Entwistle made roughly $1.4 million.

While we’re in a state of uncertainty during the current COVID-19 pandemic, it’s so beautiful to see how brands and companies are coming together to give back and help the community by making donations. One of Canada’s largest food delivery services, SkipTheDishes has just announced that it’s donating an additional $10 million to Canadian restaurants.

This comes after SkipTheDishes initially donated $5 million launched a 30-day support package for the restaurants in its network.

“Restaurants are the heart and soul of communities across Canada and the industry is facing unprecedented hardships. Though we know our support package doesn’t solve all of the challenges our restaurant partners are facing, we’re hoping it will help make an impact as we all work together to get through these exceptional times,” says Kevin Edwards, CEO of SkipTheDishes in a release.

To further help restaurants during this unprecedented and challenging time, SkipTheDishes also introduced the option for customers to support their local restaurants by directly leaving them a tip and 100% of these contributions will go directly to their restaurant of choice.

In just a few short weeks, customers have raised over $200,000 to help their neighbourhood eateries stay in business.

“The immediate outpouring of support we’ve seen from our customers in their local communities has been truly inspiring. Food continues to be a strengthening bond for many through these difficult times, and at its core SkipTheDishes is about feeding Canadians,” said Edwards.

As if this isn’t enough, Skip has also launched a partnership with Food Banks Canada to help relieve hunger at this challenging time.

An immediate $200,000 donation to match its customers kindness and additional contributions will also be made throughout the year.

“We’re beginning to see a surge in demand across Canada at local food banks as many more people have recently fallen on hard times. This partnership with SkipTheDishes will help us restock empty shelves at food banks across the country and ensure food banks have the support needed to feed those in critical need,” says Chris Hatch, Chief Executive Officer of Food Banks Canada.
