IKEA Plans To Offer Furniture Rentals In The Future
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. And after 83 years in the city, one iconic furniture retailer is closing its doors for good.
Founded in 1936, The Art Shoppe has long been a go-to for furniture collectors, interior designers, and celebrities for high-end, luxury furniture. And while its long-time customers may be sad to see it go, they can take advantage of the massive store closing store that’s happening right now.
Known for its white-glove service, The Art Shoppe is now offering its services and merchandise for 20 to 50% off, making it the biggest sale the store has ever had.

Instagram/@rosemarymuir
Shoppers will be able to find high quality pieces, like a $18,000 heirloom antique console from Italy or a $40,000 EJ Victor dining room root set, for steep discounts. And shoppers will also be able to find more affordable pieces like moderately priced console for $1,200.

Instagram/@theartshoppeto
Think throw pillows, fine art, rugs, lighting, furniture for the entire home, and more. Until the store closes, customers can expect the same attentive service that The Art Shoppe is known for, including interior design and custom orders.
While the retailer hasn’t announced its next steps just yet, Mark Bannon, Director of Furniture Solutions for Tiger Capital Group, which is conducting the strategic sale on behalf of The Art Shoppe’s ownership team, says, “Everything has its season. Like so many disrupted sectors, the luxury furniture business is entering a new phase in which smaller-format, Internet-based showrooms are on the rise. The Art Shoppe is a powerful brand with the potential for another chapter. Stay tuned.”

Why Bankruptcy Doesn
At StyleDemocracy, we know shopping! We deliver the scoop on all things retail related including how to get the best value at your favourite stores. Hidden offerings, insider secrets, and the ultimate savings.

Canadian Tire money has been around for ages. But in an effort to be more environmentally friendly, in 2018 they announced that they will be expanding their reward-program to a loyalty card called Triangle Rewards. This expansion means that you can redeem points at not just Canadian Tire locations but also at stores like Sport Chek and Mark’s.

Instagram/@canadiantire
I’m not going to lie, for a long time, I assumed that Canadian Tire was nothing more than a big-box store that sold car-related products, cleaning, camping supplies, and gardening supplies. I was shocked to find out how much they’ve expanded their horizons. Nowadays you can find appliances, snacks, outdoor furniture, home decor, pet food, and more.

Instagram/@aurora.lighting
As long as you have proof that another local retailer is selling the exact same item for a lower price, Canadian Tire will price match it for you.

Instagram/@canadiantire
So long as the item is still in perfect condition, and you still have your receipt, you can bring it back and return it. However, if you ordered the item online, you will not be refunded the shipping cost.

Instagram/@jessicasaramorris
If you’ve found the item you’re looking for online, but you aren’t sure if it’s available at your nearest Canadian Tire store, you can easily find the answers you’re looking for without having to call the store. Instead, you can fill out the “Please select a pickup location to check inventory”, select your preferred store location and presto, you’ll not only know if it’s available there, but you can find out if it’s available at any other Canadian Tire location near you.

Instagram/@westriverdesign
If you are unable to make it into the store and physically transport your purchase, don’t fret. For a small fee of $4.99, you can have most Canadian Tire products delivered straight to your front door. It doesn’t get much more convenient than that!

Instagram/@autoglym_dave
Constantly having to check online if a store is having a sale, or having to wait for the weekly flyer to show up in the mail can be a hassle. Instead, you can create an account on the Canadian Tire website and request to be notified whenever a sale is going to occur.
In the era of commercial-free TV, it isn’t so easy to stumble upon an infomercial, call in, and order an item anymore. But you’re in luck because Canadian Tire offers all the obscure, As Seen On TV home gadgets and cooking supplies that you’ve probably been curious about trying!

Instagram/@canadiantire
If you’ve tried to buy an item in-store and it wasn’t available, and it doesn’t seem to be available online either, you still have a final option. You can order the item online, and have the item shipped to you as soon as possible — eliminating the possibility of it going out of stock again before you can get to it.

Instagram/@miatastreet
There are quite a few perks to online shopping — the main one being that you don’t have to leave your house. But Canadian Tire offers one more perk, and it’s a major one: online exclusive items. I know the name speaks for itself, but this essentially means that if the item indicates it’s an online exclusive, you cannot find it in any Canadian Tire store.

Like home ownership in big cities, buying furniture is expensive. And with the the way things are moving — with more and more rental services popping up — renting furniture only seems natural.
The concept isn’t new, companies like easyhome have offered Canadians weekly and monthly leases on furniture for over a decade.
The leasing strategy certainly fits the direction the company is moving in. IKEA has played a huge role in leading sustainability in the retail industry.
Near the end of 2018, IKEA launched its Sell-Back Program. The program aims to reduce furniture waste by offering customers credit in exchange for their old Billy Bookshelves and more. And each year, IKEA has invested into becoming a more environmentally sustainable business.
In fact, IKEA’s Head of Sustainability, Brendan Seale, says that the furniture conglomerate has plans to only use recyclable and reuseable materials by 2030.

Instagram/@aseriesof3
The concept will launch as part of a pilot program in Sweden, with chairs and desks available for rent.
“You could say leasing is another way of financing a kitchen. When this circular model is up and running, we have a much bigger interest in not just selling a product but seeing what happens with it and that the consumer takes care of it,” Inter IKEA’s Chief Executive Torbjorn Lööf told the Financial Times.

Instagram/@jy_jenny_p
Not only is renting furniture, clothing, homes, and cars more sustainable and financially feasible, it also answers the consumer need for change — it allows customers keep up with trends and swap styles without commitment.
As of right now, there’s no word on when the program will make its move to North America. But if shopping trends continue to move in the direction of rentals and sustainability, it’s likely to be apart of our lives soon enough.

Disneyland, Hawaiian beaches, IKEA. What do they all have in common? Why, they’re the most magical places on earth, of course! For those of us who can’t exact travel to California or Hawaii, there’s always our local IKEA to keep us in good spirits.
IKEA is known for its juicy secrets, clean design, amazing meatballs, and reliable products. So why don’t we take a step into that magical world and see what the best (and worst) pieces are inside that big, blue box?
I sifted through the entire IKEA collection (trust me — it wasn’t easy), so that you don’t have to.

Instagram/@projekt_dom
The BJURSTA Extendable Table has a much more luxe appearance than its price would suggest. This dining table is a particular favourite among IKEA buyers, with a whopping 63 five-star reviews. People love its quality and durability the most, with many commenting that it’s perfect for an apartment.
Keep in mind that it might be a bit more difficult to install, but all that extra dining space you’ll get when you extend the table will make those installation hours more than worth it.

Instagram/@ikeaitalia
People are pretty divided on the INGATORP Extendable Table, with half loving it and half hating it so much that one reviewer described it as, “Cute but junk.”
The main problem with it seems to be its durability — it doesn’t stand up to any dents or liquid spills, and delaminates within months. Not being able to handle liquids is a bit of a problem for, you know, a dining room table.
People love the SÖDERHAMN sofa. Sure, it doesn’t exactly look like the most comfortable of couches, but the comfort (and style) is unparalleled, according to its fans who rate it an average 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Instagram/@ikeamakesmehappy
One of the most recent reviews for the KIVIK Sectional is titled, “I regret buying this couch,” so that should tell you how loved this couch is. The problem with it is not only its durability (which seems low), but the chaise part of it. One reviewer says that it barely held up 15 days before beginning to sink and form a circular indentation where you usually sit. Long story short: it won’t last and the cushions won’t, either.

Instagram/@ikeastgallen
Far and away the most loved bed at IKEA is the NORDLI Bed Frame. With 32 five-star reviews, this bed is actually unmatched by any other bed at the store. Not only does it have great storage, but it is ideal for a room on the smaller side. It seems the only downside was a mildly difficult assembly, but isn’t that most IKEA products?
Also, great news: This has soft close drawers.

Instagram/@jennyszuhause
The reviews on the HEMNES Bed Frame are terrible. Of its 169 reviews, 102 are one-star reviews. The main problem seems to be a complete lack of centre support. One reviewer’s footboard actually cracked down the middle and sent the mattress into the floor. In fact, many of the reviews mention the bed collapsing — some in the middle of the night. Yikes.

Instagram/@stylehigh.club
The HEMNES Desk desk has absolutely rave reviews, and for good reason: it’s made of real wood! The simplicity of it makes it an easy addition to any room, with one reviewer calling it a “no frills” desk. It also doesn’t take up a lot of space! Lastly, reviewers noted that it’s very durable, so it looks like HEMNES is a better desk than a bed.
Oh, bonus: it has cable storage. Score.

Instagram/@dm_handyman
The BEKANT line of desks all have…low reviews, to say the least. 116 reviews, 75 of them one-star officially makes this the lowest-rated of all the IKEA desks. Some reviewers noted that it doesn’t have longevity, with it just suddenly ceasing to raise up into a standing desk after a year or so of use.
Other buyers had a problem with the built-in power supply, on account of the actual fuse blowing in it. Not great! Not great. For the price, this desk should last longer than a year, and not have a bad fuse right out of the box.
Love them or hate them, IKEA products are staples in most homes. It’s best to do your research online before you hit the store, and then try out each piece to see how you really feel about your choice. After all, your home is your space — it should be the best place it can be!

Finding and funding rent for an apartment to yourself in the city is financially tough enough, so when it comes to furnishing, there’s usually not much budget left. Inherited old furniture is the way to go, and typically mom and dad are more than willing to help out. Problem is, most things they’ll offer up will be from the 70’s and, although in decent condition, aren’t exactly a perfect match to your new condo. Good news is, there’s ways to fix up the furniture so you don’t have to spend a bunch of cash on a trip to IKEA. Whether it’s a mirror or dresser, we got you covered with tips on how to refurbish your parent’s old furniture.
First you sand it, then you prime it, and finally, you paint it whatever colour your heart desires.

Image: Pinterest
Worn out wood from the 70’s is a look none of us are going for. Luckily, stain is cheap and easy, although it takes a day to do properly. Make your worn out light wood dresser modern with a couple coats of dark strain and, voila, it matches your new place.

Image: Pinterest
Colourful antique is trendy, and it’s also really easy. All you’ll need is some spray paint and sandpaper. First, spray it. Once it’s dry, sand off some of the paint in small patches to get the vintage look and feel. You’ll have new, old furniture in no time.

Image: Pinterest
Changing the handles on a piece of furniture is the equivalent to a face lift. Good news is, they’re easy to change and cheap to purchase. Have fun with it! Mix and match and make it your own.

Image: Pinterest
Of course, old furniture tends to come with a couple deep scratches and dents from the wear and tear. It’s easy to fix any chips with Kwikwood, a putty that repairs and rebuilds wood. You can paint or sand over and you won’t even know it was ever there.

Image: Pinterest
Because you can never have too much gold around, and it makes a perfect accent.

Image: Pinterest
The best part of old furniture is you can have fun with it. Adding design is easy. You’ll can use a stencil, old lace, or some tape will do, and spray paint over it to add an extra layer of dimension and personalization.
