As we all know, Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack are closing in Canada. While we have until June to say our last goodbyes to Nordstrom, all of Nordstrom Rack’s Canadian stores officially closed their doors on Sunday.
Canada was home to 6 Nordstrom stores and 7 Nordstrom Rack stores. Now that the Nordstrom Rack stores have closed, we’re left with just the remaining 6 Nordstrom locations left – and not for long.
Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores were short-lived in Canada, having opened the first Canadian Nordstrom Rack location in Toronto in just 2018, and closing in 2023.

That’s right – Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack are closing all its locations in Canada, as announced in a Nordstrom Press Release.
Nordstrom Canada intends to wind down its operations with the help of a third-party liquidator, and its e-commerce platform, eventually closing by the end of summer.
“…We also made the difficult decision to wind down operations in our Canadian business. This will enable us to simplify our operations and further increase our focus on driving long-term profitable growth in our core U.S. business,” said Erik Nordstrom, chief executive officer of Nordstrom, Inc.
Nordstrom’s first Canadian location was opened in 2014 at CF Chinook Centre in Calgary and Nordstrom Rack’s first Canadian store opened in 2018 at Vaughan Mills.
“We regularly review every aspect of our business to make sure that we are set up for success,” said Erik Nordstrom. “We entered Canada in 2014 with a plan to build and sustain a long-term business there. Despite our best efforts, we do not see a realistic path to profitability for the Canadian business. We want to thank our team for their performance and dedication in serving customers in Canada. This decision will simplify our structure, intensify focus on our growth and profitability goals and position us to create greater value for our shareholders.”

Have you been missing Topshop lately? Well, we have some good news. According to Retail Insider, the British retailer is headed back into Canada.
Ever since then, if Canadians wanted to purchase trendy clothing from the brand, they had to do so through ASOS, which unfortunately has duties.
Now, Topshop is re-entering, but with the help of another major retailer—Nordstrom.
You’ll be able to browse the brand in-person and on Nordstrom.ca starting April 1, plus you won’t have to pay any extra shipping duties anymore!
Retail Insider also states that allegedly Hudson’s Bay and ASOS were unable to come to an agreement to continue carrying Topshop in Canada, so ASOS turned to Nordstrom. Since losing this, Hudson’s Bay partnered with YM Inc. to have Forever 21 as part of their offering.

Looking for designer finds for less? Well, then Nordstrom Rack is about to become your new go-to spot. What you may not know is that only 20% of Nordstrom Rack’s merchandise actually comes from Nordstrom, while the rest is made specifically for the off-price Rack. Although the off-price retailer no longer ships to Canada, it’s definitely worth it to find your closest store and head on over for the savings.
Another thing to pay attention to on clothing tags is the way it is labeled. Tags that read “Nordstrom Rack” at the top weren’t initially sold at Nordstrom stores, but rather were made to sell specifically at Nordstrom Racks. A full-line Nordstrom item will never have a paper Nordstrom Rack tag.
On the contrary, if an item does have a paper tag and/or the original designer tag on it, then you know for sure that it came from a full-line Nordstrom store and wasn’t made for Nordstrom Rack only.
Many people make the mistake of assuming the ‘compare at‘ prices on Nordstrom Rack tags are indicating a regular and sale price, but this isn’t the truth. Instead of showing the regular price versus a markdown price, it is actually comparing the item with the average price of any like item. So if you find a pair of jeans for $50 and the compare at price is $100, it means that the latter is the usual going rate for an item of this type.
Regardless of whether or not an item came from a Nordstrom store, or was made specifically for the Rack, items with red tags or a red sticker on the original tag indicate clearance prices. You’ll get the deepest discounts on these items, saving up to 85% off the original Nordstrom Rack price.
Sometimes the tags at Nordstrom Rack may have multiple price stickers and handwritten prices. If you’re confused about which price is correct, apparently the red sticker price trumps all, even if the handwritten price is lower. The reason this can happen is because the item was marked down at a regular Nordstrom store before being sent to and repriced at the Rack.
While these items don’t have a dedicated area, if you do find a Nordstrom Rack tag that also reads “Altered or Refinished”, or has a blue sticker, the price will be even better. It simply means that the item has been refurbished and is therefore further discounted.
Clear the Rack sales events happen regularly at Nordstrom Rack, and it’s at these times that you can get an extra 25% off anything at the register. But don’t wait too long on an item; typically Clear the Rack sales only last two to five days.
If your goal is to get the best value on high-end designer labels, save yourself some time and head directly to any racks that have a black “Designer Row” sign or a specific designer label above them. The majority of these items will be true designer.
Is finding the biggest discounts and saving the most your top priority? Then stick to shopping at the back of the store. This is where all the red clearance racks with the biggest savings are located!

Canadian lovers of designer labels and outlet prices will be happy to hear that Nordstrom Rack will be opening a brand new location in Canada.
The off-price sister store of the American luxury department store Nordstrom opened its first location in Canada in the Spring of 2018. Since then, the off-price retailer has expanded to six locations across Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, and Calgary, with one more to come very soon.
Located at Willowbrook Shopping Centre in Langley, British Columbia, the location will be the West Coast province’s first Nordstrom Rack location.
The grand opening will take place on September 17 at 8 a.m. PST. Those who arrive at 8 a.m. can indulge in treats, music, and giveaways while they wait for the store to officially open at 9 a.m. Face masks or coverings are mandatory, so don’t forget to bring yours!
The offerings will include Nordstrom’s beloved house brands, as well as a selection of some of the same designer lines you’d find at Nordstrom, all at a discount! If the store is anything like the ones that have already opened, there will be a selection of apparel for men, women, and kids, beauty products, accessories, homeware, footwear, and more.
Back in 2018, the retailer said that it had plans to open up to 15 locations in Canada. If all continues to go well, it’s likely we’ll continue to see more Nordstrom Rack stores open across the country.

In case you missed the news, Nordstrom has started to reopen its locations across Canada after having closed them due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. The retailer’s stores closed in March and we don’t know about you, but we’ve been itching to shop again once it’s safe.
In an email sent to StyleDemocracy, the retailer says, “Our stores have always been, and continue to be, a core part of our business. We’re taking a phased, market-by-market approach to reopening our stores. The health and wellbeing of our employees, customers and communities is our priority. We’ve been paying close attention to guidance and directives from local and national authorities, taking steps to ensure our stores and operations remain in alignment with those.”
The Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations that are reopening are: Nordstrom Rideau Centre, Nordstrom Sherway Gardens, Nordstrom Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Nordstrom Toronto Eaton Centre, Nordstrom Rack Ottawa Train Yards, Nordstrom Rack Vaughan Mills, and Nordstrom Rack Heartland Town Centre.

Living in a city like Toronto definitely isn’t cheap, but that shouldn’t stop you from living your best life, and having an Insta-ready wardrobe. Affordable clothing isn’t hard to find if you know where to look. Take a gander at the places and stores below, and you’ll still have enough money left over to pay your bills.
Chinatown on Spadina is a beloved stretch of Toronto with its hodgepodge of clothing shops, markets, and restaurants. Here is where you’ll find great prices on many wardrobe basics like tees, sweatshirts, leggings, and sunglasses. Make sure to take time to sift through the many bargain racks, but take note: you won’t find very many trendy items here — just basics galore. Where else in Toronto can you get five t-shirts for $10?
If secondhand is more your vibe, make sure to check out Toronto’s long list of great vintage stores. Black Market Clothing is one of Toronto’s longest standing vintage clothing shops, specializing in vintages tees and casual clothing. You never know what you’re going to find here, but new or vintage band tees are almost always a guarantee, as well as the $10 price tag — not much is priced higher than that. Another fab option is Mama Loves You Vintage on Queen West which is great for beautiful dresses from years past.
Kensington Market is a well loved pocket of Toronto that’s known for its quirky shops, under-the-radar restaurants, and all around fun vibe. There are a ton of vintage shops, as well as stores selling an array of random basics like tees, harem pants, and sunglasses. But unlike Chinatown, you can definitely find trendy items here, especially vintage denim and jewelry. Next time you’re in Kensington Market take a stroll down Kensington Avenue and hit up stores like Courage My Love, Bubble Gum Fashion, and Sub Rosa Vintage.
In this day and age, it’s so important to try to recycle your unwanted clothing and not just toss it in the trash. Going to or even hosting a clothing swap is a really great way to stop clothing from going into landfills but it’s so true that another persons junk is another’s treasure. Wondering where to find a clothing swap? One quick search on Facebook will put you in the right direction. Happy swapping!
Over here at StyleDemocracy, we are pretty much thrift store obsessed so of course we had to include them in this list. While you have to pack your patience when shopping at your local thrift, you might be surprised at what you can find. Whether you’re after Aritzia-style clothing, plus size fashion, or workout gear, it can all be found at the thrift store for amazing prices.
What did we do before Bunz? Seriously, it might be the best invention since sliced bread and the Internet. For anyone not in the loop, Bunz is a trading app and yes, you need it. You can trade your items for pretty much anything — household items, clothes, bottles of wine, gift cards, the list goes on. And it gets even better because you can earn BTZ (Bunz currency) and there are actual stores where you can spend them.
Along with vintage, Toronto also has a number of consignment stores — whether you’re looking for more affordable secondhand clothing or designer labels. VSP on Dundas, as well as Fashionably Yours and Consign Toronto, both on Queen Street. West, have some of the best prices on second-hand designer clothing. Otherwise, if you’re just looking to strike a deal on lightly used contemporary and vintage items, head over to Common Sort.
Obviously, a list of places to buy affordable clothing in Toronto, wouldn’t be complete without including Winners and Marshalls stores. These off-price retailers specializes in giving you the best deals on labels we all love with many clearance items starting at only $20 or less. What we love most about Winners and Marshalls is the massive selection! Being a department store, there’s always a crazy amount of clothes to choose from whether it’s activewear, denim, jewellery, accessories, or apparel you’re looking for.
If you’re looking for off the runway finds without paying off the runway prices, then fast fashion retailers like Zara, and H&M are your best bet. You can always find the latest fads at these stores for a fraction of the price of their designer inspirations. On the contrary, if you’re in the market for basics and affordable office attire, try Uniqlo or Joe Fresh for budget-friendly button ups, shift dresses, blazers, and dress pants.
Nordstrom Rack is giving other retailers a run for their money, being one of the city’s favourite off-price department store to enter the Canadian market. You can expect to find all the contemporary and designer labels that Nordstrom is known for, but with some hefty markdowns. While you may not be getting the same bargains you’ll find in Chinatown or Kensington Market, the real win here is the affordable price on designer labels.
Whoever had the idea to group a bunch of outlet stores together and create a mall out of them, is our hero. While you’ll find outlet malls a little further out of the city, they’re definitely worth the trek to get to. In Halton Hills there are the Toronto Premium Outlets which include a Gucci outlet, Saks Off 5th, an Aritzia outlet, and even a Restoration Hardware outlet.
If bargain hunting is your thing, you’ll definitely want to do some shopping at upcoming warehouse sales. Make sure you stay tuned to StyleDemocracy so you’re in the loop on any upcoming warehouse sales from brands like Ted Baker, Triluxe, and Bugatti.
