10 Tips From The Pros On How To Travel Cheap

Instead of throwing everything into your suitcase and seeing what fits, use our packing tips to get organized and help maximize the most out of your carry-on.

Stash your valuables close at hand

Most airlines allow for a carry-on plus a personal item such as a handbag. Keep those special items such as prescriptions, valuables, money and other necessary travel documents close at hand when travelling.

Overhead bin space is limited.

Due to limited space in the overhead bins, you might be that unlucky soul that has to hand their bag over to the flight attendants to check. If this happens, be prepared by packing your necessities in your personal item (i.e. toothbrush, keys, ID, comb, etc…)

Make a list – check it twice.

It’s a great idea to create a brief list of the items you would like to bring with you. Depending on the airline you’re flying with, familiarize yourself with their carry-on rules and size allowances. This will help you to know how much you can pack.

packing tips

Your bag will be weighed and sized

Ensure the weight in your carry-on is distributed evenly to avoid overweight fees. Again, read about the size and weight restrictions for your carry-on ahead of time. This will save you the hassle and money if you show up at the airport and learn you have to check your carry-on.

Arrange your outfits before you pack them

Packing can be stressful at times, especially when you’re sorting out your clothing options for the trip. Minimize that stress by simply choosing a colour theme for your trip and pack the pants, skirts and tops that match your chosen palette. A few wise choices will help you mix and match for reversible looks. And of course, accessorizing with different items can spruce up any outfit.

Roll instead of fold.

Rather than getting your best friend to sit on your suitcase as you try to zip up your bag, become a roller, not a folder. Tightly rolling your clothes will make your items more compact, meaning you can pack more in. Think about all that shopping you can do on your trip with all that additional space!

packing tips

Shoes go first

Place all your shoes, boots, belts and heavier items at the bottom of your bag first. Shoes are the best compartments to put socks, belts, jewelry, or other loose items in as well.

Create your own pockets.

You can use tote bags or Ziploc bags to organize small, loose items like jewelry, chargers, underwear, etc…

You can’t bring it all

When you’re travelling with only a carry-on, it’s wise to leave a few “necessities” behind. Some hotel rooms already come furnished with hairdryers, shampoos, conditioners, etc… so it’s probably best to leave those items at home. If you’re a bookworm that travels quite frequently, think about investing in a tablet so that you can bring all your favourite reads, without the volume.

packing tips

Avoid spills

Wrap your toiletries in tightly sealed bags to avoid any surprises. When travelling with just your carry-on, it’s important for you to review your airline’s allowances of all liquids, gels and aerosols so that nothing important gets left behind.

Some things were just not meant to fly.

It is helpful for you to familiarize yourself with the guidelines in the prohibited and restriction section of your airline to understand what is permitted. This will prevent the painfully embarrassing bag dump of all your items when going through security.

Review that list once more.

Sometimes you just need to ask yourself: Do I really need six pairs of shoes for an overnight getaway? Do I really need to bring my soccer trophy from grade 2? Or my favourite stuffed animal? (No, no and no). Once you’ve packed all your items, take one last look and then take something out. This will make travelling lighter and easier.

Have the itch to travel but don’t want to pay full price? There are plenty of ways you can get around without paying a premium. You’ll master the tricks of the trade when finding the best travel deals with these helpful tips.

How far out do I need to purchase my flights?

It all depends on where you’re headed. The following are recommended timelines of when to purchase your flight so you can save the most.

  • Domestic (2 to 6 weeks out)
  • U.S. (3 to 7 weeks out)
  • Europe (8 – 10 months out)
  • South America (6 months)
  • Central America (4 – 6 weeks out)
  • Asia (9 – 10 months out)
  • Africa (3 – 5 weeks out)
  • Caribbean (2 – 3 weeks out)

When is the best time to book?

It’s all about being flexible. Choosing off-peak days and avoiding holiday seasons are best. Another thing to keep in mind, it’s always cheaper to purchase your tickets on the weekend, especially late at night. This is when the airlines reload their computers with the latest low-cost fares.

When are the best days to fly?

Choosing to depart on a Tuesday or a Wednesday will save you a lot of money since the loads are usually quite light on those days.

Booking a return flight on a Monday will save you the most cash. Try to avoid the weekends altogether – for both return and departing flights. Airlines consider this prime time flying for people who want to return before the start of a new workweek.

Where can I find the cheapest flights?

It is now a lot easier to access websites that will show you the best-priced flights. Most sites will help you find the cheapest flights in the market by breaking down the cost of every flight available. For example, they’ll show you all the available flights for each airline, the costs and the difference in price for a direct or stopover.

  • KAYAK – always our first stop when checking prices.
  • Theflightdeal.comgood at finding mistake fares that give travellers really cheap tickets.
  • Skiplagged.comSkiplagged will find the cheapest ticket to your destination — even if it’s through a layover.
  • ITAmatrix – ITA matrix will let you search the entire month to see when it’s cheapest to fly.

Cheapest Weekends to Travel Internationally

(Data provided by KAYAK)

For international travel, we see similar pricing trends with lower median airfare the later into summer we get. But unlike domestic travel, you’ll want to wait to fly either before or after the holiday long weekend due to the median airfare being about 11% higher than the cheapest weekends to travel internationally.

The median airfare for international travel is $492 so by flying on the following dates, you might just find the right flight for less.

  • August 17: median airfare $436
  • September 7: median airfare $441
  • August 24median airfare $446

Cheapest Weekends to Travel Domestically

(Data provided by KAYAK)

Labour Day marks the last long weekend before Summer comes to an end, and typically with long holiday weekends comes higher price tags. But not this year. If you’re planning a domestic trip, Labour Day weekend is actually one of the cheapest weekends to travel with median airfare hovering around $289- 22% lower than the median airfare for weekend trips.

During the summer, the median airfare for domestic weekend trips (FridaySunday) is $378. But, by travelling on the following dates, you might be able to snag more affordable flight deals and use that extra cash to treat yourself at your final destination.

  • August 31: median airfare $289
  • August 17: median airfare $293
  • September 21: median airfare $293

Stay in the know

You should keep yourself subscribed to two or three travel sites to find out about last minute deals or current sales. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook, doing this will keep you in the know about upcoming sales and offers that might pertain to you. One of our favourite travel blogs is YYZ Deals

Always keep an eye out for seat sales with WestJet, Air Canada or Porter. They usually have one or two sales a week that could save you some money. However, air on the side of caution with blackout dates and other terms and conditions. You might book yourself a ticket and not realize the blackout dates happen to fall on the days you plan to travel.

All in all, when looking for the best-priced flights, the one thing to always keep in mind is, be flexible. Allow your schedule to be adaptable and consider flying off-peak days, this will help you save some serious cash in the end. Happy flying!

When you’re in another city and see something you like in a store, your first impulse is likely just to buy it and move on with your vacay. However, there are often many instances where you could have gotten that product cheaper or received some money back on it. To find out how to save as much money on your purchases as possible, check out our list of 6 money-saving tips for shopping on vacation below.

1. BUY THINGS THAT ARE UNIQUE TO THE AREA

There’s nothing worse than purchasing an item from a store like H&M on vacation, only to see it hanging on the sale rack back home. Which is why shopping at places that are unique to the area (like boutiques that carry brands you can’t get in Canada or flea markets) is a much better decision. You’ll also end up coming home with more one-of-a-kind pieces to remember your vacation by!

2. COMPARE PRICES & PRODUCT ASSORTMENT

If you do end up shopping at a store we have at home (or purchasing a brand you know is also sold in Canada) when out of the country, it’s worth looking your potential purchases up online first to see if the Canadian prices are cheaper.

It’s also worth noting that the same store (i.e. Zara) can have different product assortment depending on the country; so if you don’t see the product you want listed on the Canadian site, then go for it!

3. GET YOUR TAX BACK

Did you know that when shopping in an EU country you could likely get a portion of your money back? If you spend a certain amount at a store (the exact amount differs between store), they will be able to grant you a VAT (value-added tax) form. You can then bring this form to the VAT desk the airport and they will refund you the added tax on your purchases back!

4. PAY IN CASH

While credit cards are a super convenient way to pay for and track your purchases when travelling, it’s important to remember that most Canadian credit cards charge foreign transaction fees. So unless you have a credit card for the country you are travelling to (i.e. a US card for when you shop in the US), then cash is the way to go!

In terms of getting your cash, make sure to convert your money before you travel so that you can look for the best possible exchange rate. Also, check with your bank about their policies regarding the use of foreign ATMs, as there is often a fee involved. If you do need to take out money while you’re away, keep in mind that making one large withdrawal will save you more than making lots of smaller withdrawals.

5. LOOK FOR COUPONS

Before you leave for your trip, it’s always a good idea to visit the websites of the stores you plan on visiting, as they will sometimes feature coupons that allow you to get an additional discount on an in-store purchase. You can also often times get an additional discount just by signing up for a store’s emails or downloading their app (which they don’t always tell you about in-store!)

It’s also worth checking out other coupon sites (i.e. Groupon) to see if the stores you’ll be shopping at have any in-store coupons listed there too.

6. SHOP AT TAX-FREE AIRPORT STORES

As any frequent flier knows, making a pit stop into Duty-Free at the airport is a great way to score premium liquor, chocolate, cosmetics and fragrances at great prices.

In terms of fashion, ones of the best airports in the world to shop tax-free is London’s Heathrow Airport, specifically Terminal 3. Here you can find a ton of high-end stores like Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton.

A designer handbag minus the tax? Yes, please!

There’s no better way to make the most out of a balmy summer weekend than to hit the Toronto Islands – Toronto’s own little escape from reality, where the only reminders of the city chaos are the peaceful and stunning views of the skyline across the water.

Yet, it remains an afterthought to many of us, taking a backseat to city patios and the Beaches. For a lot of us, a visit to the Toronto Islands may seem like too much of a mission, but if you do it properly, it’s actually quite seamless.

Here’s everything you need to keep in mind before a day spent on the Toronto Islands.

Buy Your Ferry Ticket Online First

To minimize at least some of the wait times, buy your ferry ticket online in advance – and make sure your friends do too. That way, you only have to endure the line for the ferry, not the tickets.

Get There Early or at the End of the Day to Avoid Crowds

Especially as Toronto’s density increases one glassy new condo at a time, city dwellers increasingly need an escape from the grind – and that’s exactly what the Island offers. Add a few thousand tourists to the mix, and you have yourself a patience-testing recipe of long lineups (even with a pre-purchased ticket) for super crowded ferry rides. Keep in mind that the peak period for lineups at the ferry terminal is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You Can Always Take a Water Taxi

If you have places to be, hate crowds, and don’t mind dropping a few extra dollars, a water taxi may be the way to go (although on a hot summer day, we can’t guarantee zero lineup for one). The Toronto Harbour Water Taxis operate all season long, from 8 am to 12:30 am (weekdays) or 1:30 am (Friday and Saturday nights) and cost $10 per adult each way.

Get to the Ward’s Island Beach Early to Score Real Estate on the Sand

Most of the booze-stocked young people end up on the beach at Ward’s Island, behind the rows of cottages. While it often makes for a bit of a day party on the weekends when groups of friends – previously strangers – join forces in fun, you’ll want a blanket on the sand to call home base. If you arrive well into the afternoon, finding lounge space isn’t always guaranteed.

You Can Rent an Airbnb on the Island

Often overlooked by many, there are actually a handful of cottages on the Island that are available as Airbnb rentals quite regularly. You even have the option of staying on a boat on the island. So, you don’t have to worry about catching the last ferry home after an active (and boozy) day in the sun.

A Maze Provides Free Entertainment

Many may remember the tree-lined maze from childhood visits to the Islands. While the original was removed in 2011 after it had seen better days (RIP), it was rebuilt a few years back. The 15,000-square-maze could provide hours of Sunday Funday enjoyment after taking full advantage of Canada’s upcoming marijuana legalization on the breezy island (just sayin’).

There’s a New Brewery on the Toronto Islands

This month, a brewery opened its doors on the Islands, offering another reason to spend a day there this summer. Rebranding the prime piece of the lakeside real estate that’s served up upscale BBQ and beer for years, Toronto Island Brewing Co. is now open for business. Beer-lovers will appreciate the fact that they can enjoy a cold one on a massive patio overlooking the lake.

You Can Freely Take Your Clothes Off

If you’d rather forgo any potential tan lines, you can drop it all on the clothing-optional beach. Hanlan’s Beach – located on the western part of the Island – has been a Toronto fixture since 1999, when it became the second officially recognized clothing-optional beach in Canada.

To Avoid a Ton of Children, Steer Clear of Centre Island

Although you’ll inevitably find no shortage of children throughout the islands (aside from the nude beach), if you’re looking for peace and quiet, stay away from Centre Island, where the Centreville Amusement Park is filled with sugar-amped children each day of the week in the summer months, who spill out into the surrounding area once they (or their parents) have had enough of the games and rides.

Whoever denounces winter blues as a real condition, can shove it. You definitely deserve a vacation, no explanation necessary, and you should leave ASAP.

While Florida is overdone and Mexico is less of a vacation for your liver, Bahamas could be your perfect winter escape.

Blessed by an always sunny climate, the tropical Islands are little slices of heaven; one of the main islands is even called “Paradise Island.” And for good reason – pure Instagram bliss is inevitable with picture perfect beaches and blue skies for days.

Here are eight reasons why vacationing in the Bahamas is #LifeGoals.

1. Sunwing flies direct

Departing from Toronto, Sunwing has more direct flights than any other leisure carrier, meaning getting to your sunny Island destination is easier than ever. Flights from Toronto to Nassau (the Bahamas capital) are scheduled every Thursday and Sunday until April 29, 2018.

2. The flight is only three and a half hours long

Paradise is closer than you think. The flight to Nassau averages at approximately three and a half hours. Better yet, if you hate flying or are just fancy, passengers can upgrade to Elite Plus for only $50. Hello, legroom.

3. You’re treated like royalty the second you arrive

Sunwing is the only Canadian operator who offers signature vacations with RIU Hotels and they want every vacationer to feel like Beyonce upon arrival. Think things like welcome cocktails, in-room liquor dispensers, 20% discounts on select local excursions, spa credits, poolside waiter service, and daily champagne breakfast.

4. There are no annoying kids at RIU Paradise Island

The RIU Paradise Island is an adult-only resort so your vacation won’t be riddled with the screams of spoiled children. That sounds like pure bliss in itself.

5. There’s a sh*t ton of food and endless cocktails

Unlike Cuba (sorry for naming names) the food is actually delicious in the Bahamas. The RIU features daily buffets for all meals, a number of a la carte restaurants and a cappuccino bar. Was a huge fan of the buffet doughnuts and Steak Restaurant. Two words: surf & turf.

6. Your Instagram will thank you because.. beaches

White sand. Blue skies. Crystal clear waters. The beaches in the Bahamas are glorious. The serene environment is basically begging you to have an Insta photo shoot. Don’t be shy – live your truth!!! Even if it’s five outfit changes and 30 different angles.

7. Exploring the island is easy

Sunwing took it upon themselves to scour the Island for the best it has to offer and then neatly packaged those experiences into exclusive excursions. Sailing on a catamaran and visiting the local fish market are a must. Conch (the dish of the Bahamas) is freshly caught and diced up right before your eyes. If you’re a fan of ceviche, you’ll LOVE it.

8. The Bahamas is really, really cool

The Islands are rich with culture and have way more to offer than just idyllic beaches and blue shores. Among the pastel colour buildings, there’s so much history, including pirates, canons and an old fort. The Bahamas is also a major producer of cigars and chocolate with a number of workshops you can visit.

You won’t want to leave, ever. Enough said.
