When it comes to retail in Canada, there are far and few independent stores that are able to stretch their lifetimes. In this year alone, we’ve seen a number of retailers shutter stores, but there are always a few unicorns that are able to make a mark.

Case in point: Malabar.

Malabar is Toronto’s oldest costume store and has been open in the city since 1923.

While it’s a go-to for annual Halloween costume shops, what some don’t know that Malabar boasts a costume rentals department that provides Canada’s performing arts community with handmade theatrical-quality costumes.

Open all year round, the Malabar Toronto’s Opera Department actually rents costumes for professional opera and theatre companies across Canada and the United States.

We had the opportunity to visit Malabar and try on a few costumes ahead of the spookiest day of the year. Take a peek at the video below.

Visit Malabar at 14 McCaul St. in Toronto.
