COVID-19 has changed our lives in a myriad of ways. The strategies we have put into place to adapt to our new way of living is paramount to successfully overcoming this crisis.

One of the major obstacles we all face that is essential to our survival is food. Now that we cannot freely head out to the grocery without any care, we must strategize to ensure we minimize our time outside.

There are some great solutions on how to get groceries during COVID-19.

A post shared by Whole Foods Ontario (@wholefoodsont) on

Online grocery shopping enables individuals to shop from their smartphones, computers, and tablets. But what if one does not have access to these devices? Then what can they do? A very simple solution is to utilize the new option of grocery pools offered to you by Instacart.

For example, one account can now be used to order for multiple households. Friends and family have the ability, aside from grocery pools, to do it the old fashion way. Reach out and make a list for a loved one and it can be delivered right to their door. There are also other companies such as Whole Foods, Grocery Gateway, Walmart Grocery Delivery, and Metro, to name a few. These companies offer delivery or curbside pickup as well as contactless doorstep deliveries. This can ensure everyone receives what they need and stays put right at home.

Of course, some have no other choice but to head out into our communities during this uncertain time. But rest assured that the businesses of our frontline workers have implemented safety plans to ensure not only patrons are safe but their hard-working employees as well.

Your efforts count.

Everything from shields for cashiers and drivers, extra sanitizing of items used by multiple people or in high traffic areas, visually enhancing social distancing markers on floors, limiting the number of shoppers in the store, and designating special shopping hours for the elderly and vulnerable customers. These businesses are doing their part.

The government has implemented reduced hours at almost all essential businesses. This allows us all to minimize the time we are out of our homes and to give the employees the rest they definitely deserve.

We can help these employees stay healthy by limiting our visits, not visiting if we feel sick, only touching what we really need, keeping a safe distance from other shoppers, and washing or sanitizing our hands as frequently as possible.

What are some other great ways to receive fresh produce and protein?

This is a great time for one-person households and growing families to try food plans delivered by popular companies such as Good Food, Hello Fresh, Chefs Plate, and many more. Not only do they pack all your items fresh, but the items are individually packaged and perfectly portioned for easy prepping. These companies research all the products and instructions to ensure an organized and balanced dish with ease.

That’s not all of the grocery options within the community.

There are a few other options as well. There are companies that prepare healthy meals and deliver them frozen upon order to our local communities. Not only is this an efficient way for busy families to save time while the children are out of school, or they work from home, but it gives them that option to nourish themselves and family properly during a time of chaos. It simply limits the need to go out and helps small businesses, too.

Tips for Sanitizing Your Groceries At Home

While person-to-person contact has the highest risk in transmitting the virus, the World Health Organization also says it can also be transmitted through touching contaminated surfaces and then coming in contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth. It’s better to take extra precautions and play it safe than sorry.

According to Healthline, at the very least, you should be disinfecting surfaces touched by your groceries and grocery bags. If you’re using cloth bags, wash them in the laundry once you’re done with them.

You can take extra steps in protecting yourself and your family by wiping and washing cans or boxes before you put them away, or even removing the packaging when possible. When you’re finished, remember to wash your hands.

For extra tips on how to handle your groceries during COVID-19, take a peek at the video by Jeffrey VanWingen, a family physician practicing in Grand Rapids, Michigan, below.

As we all strive to stay home and help flatten the curve, supporting each other in every aspect and where we can during this time is so crucial. Even if it’s just suggesting the options mentioned above.

Let’s cheer for the frontline workers at our essential stores as they continue to remain strong through all of this to serve us better.

Headquartered in Richmond, British Columbia, Cindy Lee, a Taiwanese-Canadian, opened its first store in 1993. The name T&T represents the names of Lee’s two daughters, Tina and Tiffany. Since then, it has rapidly expanded to include ten stores across B.C., five in Alberta, nine in Ontario, including downtown Toronto. The chain’s 25th location will open at the corner of Bayview Avenue and St. John’s Sideroad in the fall of 2018. Loblaw Companies purchased the chain in 2009.

Shop President’s Choice

Get the absolute best value by shopping Loblaws’ private label brand, President’s Choice. President’s Choice has created a huge assortment of quality food and household items that beat the pricing of most national brands. What’s the best part? If you’re not satisfied with a PC product, simply return it (even if it’s half eaten,) for a full refund.

The PC Insiders Report

Shop smarter by browsing the PC Insiders Report online before heading to Loblaws. In it, you’ll find the season’s newest President’s Choice products and awesome recipes. The PC Insiders Report offers a ton of inspiration for dinner parties and gift giving, especially helpful during the holidays!

Cooking Classes

Pick up some new skills by cooking President’s Choice products alongside the experts. Click here to sign up for PC Cooking School classes (available at select Loblaws locations at a very reasonable price).

Insta-Worthy Coffee

Visit Loblaws’ Café before hitting up the grocery aisles for a caffeine fix that’s Instagram worthy. Pair your brew with any of the decadent doughnuts, macaroons or biscotti found at Loblaws’ Patisserie for a drool-worthy shopping treat.

Grab a Drink

Convenience is everything! You can now pick up beer and wine at select Loblaws locations. While Loblaws’ alcohol selection is a bit limited, it certainly comes in handy when an LCBO is closed or out of reach.

Know Your Price Tags

Loblaws’ price tags tell you everything you need to know about a product. We recommend being cautious of sale prices (which typically require items to be purchased in multiples to qualify for a discount). Also pay close attention to when “DNO” is marked on price tags. This equates to “Do Not Order”, meaning that Loblaws won’t carry this product for much longer so don’t get too attached to it.

loblaws_queen_and_portland_shoppers_must_know7

Know Your Prices

Loblaws abides by the Retail Council of Canada’s Scanner Price Accuracy Code. What does this mean? Basically, Loblaws has agreed to provide customers with accurate and transparent pricing. Therefore, if an item scans differently from the price indicated on the shelf, a customer is entitled to get the item for free. The policy goes into a bit more detail but just ask any Loblaws employee and they’ll be able to assist you.

PC Plus Program

We’ve told you about the PC Plus program before and how using it along with the handy PC Plus app can help you to save money at the grocery store. If you’re still not familiar with this loyalty program, sign up! You’ll be prompted to download weekly coupons that are actually relevant to your shopping behaviour. Imagine receiving coupons to earn bonus points on the items you actually buy?

Shop Reduced Items

Look out for bright pink 50% off stickers on various produce and health and beauty items. You can save big on these items because they are either nearing their expiration date or have been discontinued. Find ‘Reduced’ displays hidden in corners or in shopping carts beside the Customer Service Desk where Loblaws doesn’t want you to find them.

 Grocery Shopping Online

Click & Collect is now available at select Loblaws locations. That’s right! Hop online and toss grocery items into your shopping cart (totaling a minimum of $30). For a $3 fee, you can schedule a pick-up at your convenience and avoid the hassle of crowded aisles during the holidays for a much more efficient grocery shopping experience.

Loblaws pleaded guilty to participating in industry-wide bread price-fixing from 2002 to 2015, and extended an olive branch to eligible customers. Starting today, patrons can register on loblawcard.ca to receive a $25 gift card for free food products at any Loblaws stores, including No Frills, Zehrs, Provigo, Superstore, and many others. The website has a sign-up form plus details on the program, but make sure to read the fine print. Cards have no expiry date, but May 8 is the cut off date to register.

https://www.instagram.com/p/0qKkgyMgIf/?hl=en&taken-by=loblawson

While there is no proof of purchase necessary to participate, only those who purchased certain bread products between 2002 and March 2015 are entitled to the card. The packaged bread products with hiked up prices include: Ben’s Bread, Bon Matin Bread, Country Harvest Bread, Dempster’s Bread, D’Italiano Bread, Gadoua Bread, McGavin’s Bread, No Name Bread, Old Mill Bread, POM Bread, Weston Bread, and Wonder Bread.

The grocer’s move aimed to mollify angry customers when they found out about Loblaw’s admission to inflated packaged bread prices last year.

“Loblaw discovered that Canadians were overcharged for the cost of some packaged bread products in our stores and other grocery stores across Canada.” – Loblaws

The $25 Loblaw Card is good for any food purchases made in Loblaws stores across Canada. Purchases of alcohol, tobacco, gas, or ATM cash withdrawals cannot be purchased with the card. While Loblaws reserves the right to limit the number of cards given out, their website does not state the cap.

There are numerous class action suits against the company, but participation in the rebate program is completely separate from these lawsuits. “Agreeing to this release will not impact your right to participate in any class actions relating to an overcharge on the price of packaged bread,” states the fine print. However, on the sign-up form, it clearly states that $25 will be deducted from any compensation from the lawsuits. In addition, be prepared to give a lot of personal information, such as date of birth, address, etc.

Will they? Won’t they? There seems to be a little flip-flopping behind Sears‘ strategy to provide groceries to its future companies. Earlier we reported that the struggling retailer intended to sell groceries. Subsequently, we had to amend the article after Sears got in touch with us and informed us they would not be selling groceries.

While Sears may not directly sell groceries to customers it looks like the brand will partner with a grocery supplier and sell fresh produce and food within sears, but operated in partnership.

The Financial Post is reporting that Sears Canada Inc. is looking to expand its plan to sell organic groceries and create “dash-buttons” to help customers shop from home.

The financial post article quotes Sears’ executive chairman Brandon Stranzl as saying the grocery offering will be “Kind of like Whole Foods at a Joe Fresh price,”

Sears Canada Inc. is looking to expand its plan to sell organic groceries and build so-called dash buttons to help customers purchase their favourite products from home as the retailer better known for tools and appliances looks to reinvent itself.

Additionally, in an effort to integrate the Sears brand into shoppers everyday lives, Sears plans on creating “dash buttons”. Dash buttons have been popular with mega brands like Tide who have partnered with e-commerce platforms like Amazon to create pushable buttons that are connected to online ordering system and live on a physical product. For example, Tide buttons can be attached to your laundry machine, when you are low on Tide, you simply push the button and Tide is automatically ordered to your house through a platform like Amazon.

According to the Financial Post, Sears reported a $45.8 – million loss in its most recent quarter, and the brand is trying desperately to diverse its product offering in an effort to appeal to a new customer.

The interesting question will be can Sears attract customers with food? Brands like Ikea have been successful bringing customers in with food options, and Loblaws di the reverse attracting customers in with clothing options.
