Is there anything more annoying than purchasing something online, receiving the wrong size or colour, and then being turned down for an in-store return? Well, we could think of a few things that are more bothersome – spilling something on a white shirt, rain on freshly straightened hair, the screech of a fork across a dinner plate, and more but, that’s not the point.This is: in a world where the amount of online stores now outnumber the brick-and-mortars, some retailers still don’t accept the return of products purchased online in person.
If you’re looking to save time by shopping online, but want to make sure you can return your item in-store instead of mailing it back and having to pay return postage, shop from these stores, instead.
Here’s a list of 16 retailers that you can shop online but make your return in-store — in alphabetical order, of course!
Aldo
You may return online orders to any Aldo store with the original receipt and packaging within 60 days of purchase. Shipping charges are non-refundable and in the interest of hygiene, earrings, cosmetics, underwear, and swimwear (if the hygiene seal is broken) may not be refunded or exchanged.
American Eagle
All online purchases are eligible for in-store returns at AE and Aerie locations. Bring your invoice or order confirmation (printed or on your mobile device), a piece of government-issued ID, and the credit card used to make your original purchase. No worries if you don’t have an invoice, order confirmation, or receipt – AE will let you exchange your item and give you store credit for the current price in the form of a gift card. Shipping is non-refundable.
Best Buy
Generally, most Best Buy products bought online can be returned in-store within 30 days of original purchase, excluding Best Buy Marketplace products. You’ll need to bring your original receipt, method of payment, packaging, and a piece of valid photo ID to your nearest Best Buy location to complete your return. Costco
With the exception of some restrictions on diamonds and electronic products, Costco.ca merchandise may be returned to any Costco warehouse worldwide. Within 90 days of purchase, televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPod/MP3 players, and cellular phones must be inspected to qualify for a refund. Gap, Banana Republic & Old Navy
Yes, the Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy are all owned by the same company, which makes returns and exchanges easier since the return policies are the same. You have up to 45 days to make a free return to the appropriate store you purchased from, (you can’t return something you bought from Banana Republic to the Gap), but items marked “mail only”, merchandise must be returned by mail. Refunds require proof of purchase, so be sure to bring an invoice or the original credit card you used.
Guess
All unworn, unwashed, or defective Guess merchandise can be returned or exchanged in store with an original invoice and piece of ID up to 30 days after shipment. Make sure your items are wrapped in original packing materials and have any sanitary liners intact. Pierced jewelry, undergarments, lingerie, fragrances, lotions and items marked “final sale” on the retailer’s website, tag, or invoice are not returnable.
Home Depot
For customer convenience, items purchased on homedepot.ca can be returned to any of its Canadian stores within 90 days of purchase, with minor exceptions. There’s also major perks to owning a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, as you’re given 365 days from the date of your purchase to return items to any Home Depot store and receive a full refund, unless otherwise stated on the company’s website. Simply bring your items into Home Depot with a copy of your shipping confirmation to make a return.
Hot Topic
You can return any item purchased from Hot Topic’s online store within 30 days of its original purchase, with the exception of some items like body jewellery and Halloween costumes. All clearance items purchased on Hot Topic’s website are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged. Bring your invoice or packing slip with you to any location unless your purchase was made through PayPal, in which case exchanges or returns can only be made by mail.
Lasenza
If you’re in the market for some new lingerie, skip the mall and shop Lasenza online instead. You have 30 days to return your online purchases in-store but just make sure all the tags and hygienic liners are still attached, and you bring your original invoice and method of payment with you.
Lululemon
If you purchased Lululemon merchandise on the company’s North American site, it can be returned to any North American Lululemon store except for a Lulu factory outlet within 30 days of receiving your order. Lululemon is unable to process a refund to PayPal in-store, but they can apply a store credit to a gift card, AMEX, Visa, or MasterCard. Items like underwear, water bottles, and items bought during the “we made too much” sale are final sale only.
Nordstrom
You can return any item purchased from Nordstrom.com to a Nordstrom store along with your original receipt and form of payment. Note that the company does not accept returns of Nordstrom or Nordstrom.com merchandise at Nordstrom Rack locations.
PetSmart
If you bought something on petsmart.ca that you want to return, simply bring the product in its original packaging with a packing slip or a shipping confirmation email as proof of purchase within 60 days to any PetSmart store in Canada.
Sephora
Making an online return to a Sephora store is as easy as it gets. To return an item purchased from Sephora.ca, visit a free-standing Sephora location within 60 days of purchase and bring the original packing slip as well as the original payment method you used to make your purchase.
Sunglass Hut
Whether you made a purchase from Sunglass Hut in person or online, you can always make a return to one of its retail stores within 30 days. Just bring your product, proof of purchase and all of the original packaging.
Toys R Us
At Toys R Us, returns and exchanges can be made within 30 days of purchase with an original receipt, despite some exceptions. To return an online purchase to any one of its Canadian stores, wrap the product in its original packaging, bring a copy of your packing slip, and the order confirmation email.
Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters will gladly accept an in-store return from UrbanOutfitters.com at any of its Canada or U.S. store locations within 30 days of purchase. Just make sure you bring your original packing list with you.
Walmart
Besides a few small differences and exceptions, Walmart’s return policy is the same for both online and in-store purchases. But, seriously – almost anything purchased on Walmart.ca can be returned in-store within 90 days.
