Bulky jackets, shorter days, and colder winds — these are all signs that winter is coming. On top of the obvious, our body offers signals, too. Some of the cons that come along with the coldest months of the year are itchy skin, chapped lips, and perhaps the most dreaded of all — a dry scalp.

It’s safe to say that a combination of poor air flow from winter hats and super low moisture levels make winter a nightmare for our tresses and their home; bringing on dryness, itching, and the dreaded “D” word…dandruff.

For some, like myself, an itchy scalp is inevitable once the frigid air hits, but I recently found a product that has become my go-to dry scalp solution — and it’s just $12.

dry scalp solution

Marc Anthony’s Nourishing Hemp Oil Instant Cooling Scalp Treatment has become a staple in my shower and my dry scalp solution.

I discovered the product, along with its sister shampoo and conditioner, when the collection launched in August and I haven’t looked back since.

With hemp seed oil at its base, the Marc Anthony Nourishing Hemp Oil Instant Cooling Scalp Treatment is free from Sulfates, SLS Parabens, and Phthalates — all things that can affect your scalp. Paired with tea tree oil, the formula is rich in omega fatty acids which helps promote longer, thicker hair and is silicone free, which means there’s no heavy build up.

The scalp treatment is super easy to use and only adds a few extra minutes to my shower routine.

It can be used two ways: as a pre-wash treatment while your hair is wet, or on problem areas when your hair is dry. Its compactness makes it easy to back in your purse and takes up little space on your shelf, and its rollerballs make it easy to target problem areas.

Once it’s applied, the Marc Anthony Nourishing Hemp Oil Instant Cooling Scalp Treatment does exactly what it says — it cools down itchy areas and offers a tingly, fresh feeling.

Since using it, I’ve definitely noticed a difference. It’s lifted a weight off my flake-free-shoulders, offering much needed hydration and time in between washes. If you experience the same, itchy feeling, I’d suggest you give this product a go.

Having a good skincare routine is something my mom engrained into my head from a young age. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been living a double cleanse life — albeit, it doesn’t work for everyone.

With that being said, the key players in my daily skincare routine — cleanser, micellar water, toner, serum, and moisturizer — are constantly rotating. Rarely do I find a product that I just can’t live without; I’m always exploring new products that work with my skin and my budget.

himalayan charcoal clay wash

Recently, I found a face wash that I haven’t been able to stop raving about to my friends — and it’s only $18.

Not to mention, you can find it in pretty much every shopping mall.

The Body Shop’s Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Clay Wash is my new favourite cleanser for a number of different reasons, but the main reason is that it’s made my face incredibly soft. Coupled with my current favourite toner, MAY COOP Raw Sauce; and holy grail Belif True Cream Moisturizing Bomb, The Body Shop cleanser doesn’t leave my skin tight, dry, or dehydrated.

himalayan charcoal clay wash

The Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Clay Wash is also amazing at removing my makeup.

Typically after washing my face, the next step in my skincare routine is removing any excess makeup with a micellar water. And typically, the cotton pad that I use to do this ends up black and brown with leftover makeup and daily grime that my cleanser missed.

But since I started using the Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Clay Wash, my cotton pads have stayed fairly true to its original colour, meaning that the cleanser is actually doing what its name says it does — removing the impurities from my face.

If you’re looking for a new facial cleanser, give The Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Clay Wash a shot — you can find it at any The Body Shop store.

Here are all of the products I’m obsessed with in my skincare routine right now.

Whether you love secondhand shopping for the thrill of finding a unique piece to add to your wardrobe, have lux taste on a budget, or want to shop ethically and sustainably, thredUP is one of my favourite places to do all of that (and I think it might become yours, too!).

thredUP is an online consignment store that offers a huge selection of women and kids’ brand name clothing, shoes, and accessories at up to 90% off retail prices.

If you’re wondering whether shopping thredUP is the right store for you, I’m here to give you the low down on my experience.

Instagram/@thelowlowstyle

With over two million pieces online at any given time and over 30 thousands new arrivals every single day, I was initially overwhelmed with all of the options available. From designer items to maternity, plus size, shoes, and accessories, thredUP is not kidding around.

I knew I needed to take a step back and make a list of things I needed in my wardrobe and the brands I knew and already loved. Then my hunt began. I settled my search on summer dresses from Reformation, Wilfred, Babaton, and Talula, and designer handbags from Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Burberry.

If you’ve ever thrifted at a regular secondhand store, you’ll know that sifting through racks and racks of clothing can be daunting and time-consuming.

thredUP has the option of narrowing down searches according to style, colour, type, price, size, and brand. This is by far my favourite feature and allowed me to find exactly what I was looking for in a fraction of the time it takes me to finish my coffee. Enough said.

Instagram/@thredup

Another one of my favourite features? thredUP saved my cart for a full 24-hours.

Yes, that’s right, a full 24-hours. This meant that I could add every item that caught my attention to my cart without worrying that someone would steal my perfect-for-me item right from under my nose while I pondered my financial situation. Oh, and when I came across an item that was already in someone else’s cart? Well, thredUP gave me the option of notifying me through email when the item became available again.

Each item page contains a few pictures of the item, a full description (size, measurements, material, etc.), an explanation of the condition, and how it fits. I ended up selecting a vintage Louis Vuitton and two Reformation dresses that were described as “in excellent condition. You might mistake it for brand new!”

thredup review

Instagram/@consciouslykat

Initially, the prices looked extremely low to me, but then I realized that they were in American dollars, which made more sense.

Shipping to Canada started at $11 USD and went up as I added more items to my cart. No duties were added to my total, and I had a discount code! Score!

When I received my items, they came in some seriously cute packaging. Everything was folded and placed neatly in a polka dot box, and there wasn’t anything wasteful and unnecessary, just some tissue paper, my items, and my order details. I was pleasantly surprised that each of my items arrived as described. They looked brand new and smelled pretty good — not factory fresh, but that was okay with me.

I was lucky enough to not have to return any of my items, but things happen. threadUP has a 14-day return policy (subject to a restocking fee and excluding handbags) if you’re not 100% happy with your items.

If you’re interested in shopping at thredUP, new members get 50% off their first order. Happy secondhand shopping!

In a time where 40 or more shades of foundations is the norm, diversity in shade ranges for beauty companies is expected… Not only in foundations, but other coloured products as well.

And just recently, Maybelline — the maker of many drugstore holy grails— launched a collection of lipsticks that are meant to be flattering for all, no matter the complexion.

Aptly named Made For All, the statement is bold considering that, just like foundations, lipsticks have different undertones to suit different skin tones.

With seven lipsticks in the collection, affordably priced at around $10.99 per shade, our team at StyleDemocracy wanted to put Maybelline’s claim to the test.

Red For Me

A natural beauty skeptic when big promises are made, I initially didn’t think each lipstick shade would look good on me, let alone all of us. I was quickly proved wrong because not only are all of these lippies perfect for our skin tones but they all worked for me.

Maybelline clearly knows what they’re doing because these super pigmented lipsticks are hydrating and they went on so effortlessly. Bonus points because the colour didn’t bleed at all so you won’t even miss your lip liner! — Blair Stutz (@blairalex), Editor & Community Manager

Mauve For Me

I was actually delightfully surprised at how the shades all looked on all of us! I could actually get away with sporting these lipsticks without wearing a lip liner… But for my melanin babes, a nice chocolate brown lip liner would be the perfect addition to these fabulous lipsticks!

My fave shades on my complexion were Red For Me, Pink For Me, and Mauve For Me — Sosa Eholor (@dolledbysosa), Digital Marketing & Advertising Coordinator

Spice For Me

Like Blair and Sosa, I was shocked to see how great each of us looked in every single colour, especially since we all have such different complexions.

While there are some shades in the collection that I don’t see myself wearing day-to-day, I wasn’t mad at how any of them looked. In fact, I love the idea of universal drugstore lipsticks, especially since you typically can’t test them out in store — it ups your chances of walking away with something that’ll look flattering when you get home!

My favourite shade was Spice For Me, a cinnamon-brown with a little more oomph than your average neutral. — Amanda Phuong (@amandaphuong), Director of Digital Marketing

9 Canadian Beauty Brands To Shop At Sephora Right Now

What do you get when you cross a makeup junkie with a dollar store fan? Hi, how are ya? That’s me.

Whether it’s a quick jaunt to Sephora or a stop at Shoppers Drug Mart, I am not picky about what brands I try out. In fact, 90% of the time, I prefer a good drugstore brand to any of the high-end ones. Drugstore makeup is where it’s at.

Then there’s dollar store makeup.

I’ll get this out of the way: I definitely still have eyes. And lips. Dollarama makeup didn’t, as I feared, cause any kind of allergic reaction on my face. So, yes, it’s definitely safe to use — even for those of us with really sensitive skin.

The selection of makeup, however, was not the best. Products vary from Dollarama to Dollarama (the one I was in most recently had a particularly great arts and crafts section), and the ones I checked out all seemed to carry a small stock of product. However, with a $20 budget and the determination to make this work, I came away with 5 key products I figured were worth checking out.

The dollar store makeup haul:

Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Volumizer (Regular Price: $11.99, Dollarama Price: $4)

dollarama makeup

First of all, yes! Strangely, Dollarama does carry some drugstore brands. At the locations I hit up, I found Maybelline, Wet n Wild, CoverGirl, Revlon and more. The shade selection is virtually nonexistent, with most stores only carrying one of each, but I did manage to find a “blonde” brow product at one store.

One of the first things I tested was the product’s smell. Since it’s at Dollarama, I wasn’t too sure whether the product was expired. The minute I opened up the tube, a sharp smell hit my nose. Sharp, stale, or alcohol-like smells are sure-fire giveaways that your makeup has kicked the bucket.

However, since I did make myself a guinea pig, I decided to give it a shot.

Ah, the things I do for beauty.

The hair-like fibres floating in the brow gel threw me off a little, because they kind of look…well, gross. But those were just the aforementioned fibres. The spoon applicator is clumsy and badly shaped. It was impossible to swatch on my arm or the back of my hand, too.

I had more luck with the application straight to my eyebrows. The gel and fibres went on generously, but they quickly globbed together. I’d recommend short, quick strokes over the long ones I tried out. I’d also recommend only giving this one pass over your brows — two resulted in me getting dry globs (ew) all over my face and brow area. The gel dries very quickly, and clumps up like the worst of mascaras. I wound up using my own brow pencil to try and even out patchy areas and to actually define my brows. Not cute.

Also, please don’t use expired makeup. It’s just a bad idea. Let me make those questionable choices for you.

Rating: ?. It has promise, but the applicator kills the whole product.

Mariposa Sapphire Lashes in 012 Star Struck (Price: $3)

dollarama makeup

Finally, some unique Dollarama makeup! Lashes are a must in today’s beauty world, and also really, really hard to get right. Since luxury lashes can set you back a whopping $38 for a single pair, it makes sense to do some bargain hunting.

I would say give these a pass.

You can get pretty good lashes for a reasonable price, like an Ardell set for $7.99. You cannot get a good pair at Dollarama for $3. These lashes behaved entirely like stiff plastic, and felt the same way.

I used some standard lash glue to place these on my own lashes. They applied fine, which is perhaps the high point of them. However, they were spiky, awkward, and very unyielding — they weren’t super into curving to match my eye shape, or to having mascara applied to them to help them blend with my natural lashes better. The bristles were oddly thick, too.

Rating: ?. They’ll do in a pinch, but if you’re near a Dollarama, you’ll likely be near a Shoppers. Get better lashes at Shoppers.

CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast (Regular: $9.99, Dollarama: $4)

dollarama makeup

I hate this product.

Sorry, my bad. What I meant to say was that I really, really hate this product. It’s meant to be a 2-in-1 solution to a smokey eye, with two cream sticks stuck on either end of a plastic applicator that — spoiler alert — doesn’t do much to actually hold its product in place. (Yes, that means I dropped the whole black shadow cream stick onto my pants. No, I do not want to talk about it.)

The black cream shadow stick wasn’t half bad. As you can see from the swatches, it doesn’t start out as much, but it builds nicely with a few strokes. It also blends quite well, though I quickly discovered that the reason for that was because the product is just plain greasy. Grease tends to blend, you see.

The white cream shadow may as well have not been there at all. I managed to get some pigment out of it after many passes over my arm, but my eye wasn’t so lucky. It wound up making my eyelid look almost grey, and the greasy texture just slid the sparkle around more than anything.

Of course, it creased and smudged immediately. It began to disappear even as I blinked, and it survived about 2 minutes under my eyes. The shadow never dried down, so it just moved and moved. In the end, I was left with what I imagine a good smokey eye would look like after wearing it for two days straight, including showering in it.

Rating: 0/5.

Wet n Wild Color Icon Kohl Pencil (Regular: $0.99, Dollarama: $4, which means I was ripped off, your honour)

dollarama makeup

This is a solid pencil that you should not pay $4, but $0.99 is fine by me. It behaves much the way MAC’s Eye Kohl does, in my opinion, in that it smudges nicely and has good pigmentation, but slips and slides and has a hard time not migrating around your eye.

I couldn’t keep this product on my waterline to save my life. It did, however, perform better than the CoverGirl black shadow stick, but the bar was pretty low there.

Rating: ?. You could do better, and you should — you deserve it.

Mariposa Matte Lipstick Collection ($3.50)

dollarama makeup

Okay, well, first of all, these are not all matte, so let’s just say that up front.

Second of all, these are amazing. Aside from the obvious weak link with the pink, these lipsticks performed like a dream. After four duds with the other products, I was actually excited to swatch these and find that they were good. Is that a little sad? You know what, maybe it is. Moving on.

The three unnamed reds all have gold micro-shimmer in them, so throw any idea of a matte lip out the window. However, they have so much going for them: they’re smooth, creamy, comfortable, pigmented, and they sure do last. Swatching them actually stained my arm, so you can bet they also stayed on my lips for a long time.

Two of the reds are pretty similar in shade, as you can see from the swatches. The middle shades have enough subtle differences to read slightly warm (second from bottom) and slightly cool (second from top). The second bottom shade leans pretty coral. The standout is obviously the top dark red, which is going to park itself in my rotating red lipstick collection as soon as I’m done writing. I’m nuts about it.

The pink one…it was nice of you to show up, bud, and you can have a participation trophy if you want. Your streakiness, lack of pigmentation, and overall bad colour brought you way down, but you do get points for being the only true matte in the bunch.

Rating: ?. I am finally proud of you, Dollarama. This is a solid set for a small amount of money.

Thank you for joining me on my journey through dollar store makeup. I get the feeling we’re just getting started — who knows what treasures await us in the land where things are supposed to be $1, but rarely are.

Fashion Nova fell onto my radar six months ago after I had developed a major girl crush on Instagram star Tammy Hembrow. She had posted a clothing haul from the e-comm store, and I immediately started surfing the online.

I’m fairly short, 5 feet to be exact, with a petite frame. I typically wear a size 25, so finding denim in the right length and size isn’t always easy. I decided to put Fashion Nova to the ultimate test and start my shopping spree with a search for the perfect denim, skimming through 25+ pages to find the right pair.

To be honest, I was a bit hesitant because Tammy Hembrow’s booty is substantially larger than your average, so I wasn’t sure how the fit would work for me. But with other influencers like Kylie Jenner and Khloe Kardashian sporting denim from the website, I was determined to find out if the hype was real.

The prices are all in US dollars, making the cost superficially low — when shopping, remember to add about 30% onto your order for conversion. Shipping to Canada is free if you spend $75, though you might incur duties depending on how much you spend. The shipping is also very fast; my order came in less than 7 business days, which works out well if you’re shopping for a special occasion!

Fade Into You Jeans, $39.99

fashion nova review

Quality/Fit: Great! I decided to go with a black ripped denim in size 1. The quality is good; they have a ton of stretch which allows for more than a singular body type to look flawless in them.  The jeans are a cotton and rayon blend, with a bit of Spandex, making them super easy and comfortable wear. Pant legs are always long on me, so that was to be expected, but they don’t bunch too much at the bottom, giving me the option to leave them as is, or fold them for a different look. The front and back pockets are real, which I love because where else do you put your phone when you’re having a no purse moment?

Dark Distress Jeans, $39.99

Quality/Fit: These jeans were such a good purchase. I wear them all the time because they are tight and hug my body quite nicely. This pair is a size 1, as well. One issue I typically notice with different styles of high waisted jeans is that they squeeze your body too tight, leaving you with a faux pregnancy bump (not a good look). These jeans seamlessly hold me in without suffocating me to death. While the high waist on these jeans is a bit excessive, I think it’s merely because my measurements are not ideal for adult clothing… unless I’m buying a t-shirt to wear as a dress.

If you recognize the name Zaful, it’s likely you’ve seen the online store’s ads following you on Facebook, or tagged on your favourite cool girl’s Instagram account.

Zaful is a fast fashion online shop that has a plethora of options and styles — essentially everything is less than $30, which is what I love most. I love clicking through page after page (and there are a lot) of styles that I can actually afford. It’s so satisfying spotting great finds amongst a mountain of rather subpar fashions.

The one thing that’s important to remember, though, is that all prices are in US dollar; you have to remind yourself not to get carried away and to add about 30% to your total for the exchange. Shipping is usually free, but depending on how much you order, you might get snagged with duties.

In my case, I ordered eight things, and my order was split five and three items per shipment; I had to pay duties on the first five which was $30. On top of that, I have still yet to receive my other three items, which I ordered on June 14th (at time of posting, it is has been one month).

The first part of my order arrived quite quickly within 6 days of purchase, which I was vaguely able to track since the overseas tracking system Zaful uses is not overly accurate when it’s in transit. With that being said, here’s what I ordered:

zaful review

High Low Striped T-Shirt with Drawstring Shorts
Cost: $14.99
Quality & Fit:
Fair/Average. The quality of the fabric was exactly what I expected. The cotton was not anything special, but it also wasn’t overly cheap.  I ordered the size small, and it has just enough stretch in the waistband and in the material. I didn’t love that the drawstring was fake, because what’s the point? I would have rather not had the extra decoration around my waist line. While the outfit is not overly flattering, I wanted something easy and comfortable to wear to the park/beach and to run errands, and that’s exactly what I got.

Ribbed Knotted String Bralette Bikini
Cost: $11.99
Quality & Fit:
Great. I think it’s pretty hard to mess up a bathing suit, with so many inexpensive options online, I feel like most companies deliver quality suits.  I ordered a size small in this bathing suit, and it fits perfectly on top — I’m rather large chested with 34D bra size.  I decided on this bather because I liked the extra coverage and support that the top seemed to offer. The top is lined and padded, which I appreciate since it provides one extra layer of coverage.  The bottoms are super cute, but tiny! I love them, especially since I’m smaller on the bottom and less coverage is necessary. It’s also lined and has long ties for size adjustment. The material is ribbed and is actually really nice, so overall, I was super excited and wore it to the beach right away.

Zipper High Leg One Piece Swimsuit
Cost: $15.49
Quality & Fit:
Fair/Average. I would say the material this bathing suit is made out of is below average, but matched with the fit (I ordered a size small), I’ll give it an average rating.  This doesn’t mean I don’t like it or won’t wear it, but it’s not traditional swim material, which is kinda lame. I got the bathing suit specifically for days where I’m feeling a bit more bloated (Hello, summer bod 2019) or need a simple black bather for a floatie selfie. The high leg on this suit is accurate and is very necessary when you’re only 5ft tall. The zipper actually works, which is a plus if you want to take your one piece to the next level.  The price on this piece relative to the other things I bought from Zaful is a bit pricey (keep in mind US dollars) for what it is.

zaful review

Button Up Off Shoulder Cropped Top
Cost: $10.99
Quality & Fit:
Good. I bought a black and white version of this top in size medium, because I was certain it was going to be a must have this summer. I like the feel of the fabric and it has lots of stretch, which is necessary when you’re doing a tube top with sleeves. With that being said, the black and white both fit differently. The white for some reason is tighter and pulls in the middle where the faux buttons are and creates an unflattering hole right in the middle of the top (shaking my head). Thankfully I just wear this top with overalls , so you can’t tell.

I can’t believe how entertaining Nicholas Billon’s thriller The Butcher was despite the heavy plot about torture and genocide. I was prepared for a dark play, and was shocked by how funny the beginning was, until later when it did, in fact, turn dark.

With only four actors, it was easy to get to know each character very well and because I knew them so well, the twists and turns were even more compelling. The pace of the script had me constantly changing my mind on who I liked or disliked, and had me completely involved. The dialogue was so quick back and forth that there was constant tension, stress, and discomfort amongst many other feelings.

Perhaps my favourite aspect of the play was its production, mainly lighting and sound. Taking place in a police station, the set did not change, but there were many highlights captured by intensely stylized lighting and sound.

Overall, another thrilling hit brought to the city by David Mirvish – a must see!
