The Canadian department store has found another partner. The Vancouver company MEC, is headed inside of select Hudson’s Bay locations.

MEC, which stands for Mountain Equipment Company, will be taking over the previous Forever 21 spots that were inside Hudson’s Bay stores, according to Retail Insider

The three MEC stores that are opening by the end of 2022 will be at the Hudson’s Bay locations in Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Square One, and the downtown Toronto flagship store on Yonge Street. Plus, with more to open next year.

Not only will MEC have a larger physical presence, but the brand will also be available on The Bay’s site

Retail Insider states that “the partnership was struck after multiple conversations between MEC and Hudson’s Bay, recognizing the opportunity for two iconic Canadian brands to come together under one roof.”

If you’re not familiar with MEC, it offers a ton of outdoor gear and equipment from well-known brands like The North Face and Patagonia, as well as its own in-house label.

Next year’s expansion plans don’t have an exact date or locations listed just yet, so stay tuned.

Unfortunately, another one bites the dust. A popular Hudson’s Bay in Toronto is closing its doors in the next few months.

The Hudson’s Bay located at 44 Bloor Street East will shutter on May 31, after operating for almost 50 years.

According to an HBC spokesperson, Tiffany Bourré, the Hudson’s Bay Queen Street flagship is located so close to the Bloor Street one, that it makes sense to close it down.

On the other hand, CityNews reported that HBC actually had quite a bit of rent payment issues during the lockdown with a handful of its stores.

This could also be a major reason that led to the decision of closing.

Hopefully, this isn’t a sign of what has to come for other Hudson’s Bay stores in the future, as taking a browse around the department store is always a great shopping trip.

If you can make it out to the location before the closing date, it might be worth it in case of any large blowout sales!

Now, this is a major throwback! After officially closing its last location in Canada over a year ago, Zellers is making a comeback. The Hudson’s Bay at the Burlington Centre has launched a Zeller’s pop-up store inside.

In case you didn’t know, HBC actually still owns the right to the name of the Zellers chain, which is why you’re able to shop it there.

If you choose to browse the racks of the red and white retailer located on the second floor of The Bay, you’ll find a ton of Canada-themed apparel and home products.

Back in 1990, Zellers was operating over 350 stores across the country and was a staple to many Canadians. So in 2011 when store closures were first announced, many people were quite saddened by the news.

The last two remaining Zellers in Etobicoke and Ottawa finally closed in early 2020.

Stay tuned for more info as we may be seeing even more Zellers pop-ups across Hudson’s Bay stores in the near future.

Fingers crossed!

Lululemon is in, and Hudson’s Bay is out. The Canadian Olympic Committee and Canadian Paralympic Committee have just announced that athletic apparel brand lululemon is the new Official Outfitter of Team Canada.

This news has rocked the Canadian apparel industry. HBC has been part of dressing Team Canada since 2005, and actually took the spot over from Roots.

We’ll see the change in branding beginning with the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2022.

This partnership will last at least until the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

Calvin McDonald, CEO, lululemon, said in a press release, “Supporting these incredible athletes as they prepare to compete on the world’s largest sporting stage is a privilege. Through this partnership, all of us at lululemon are honoured to play our part to inspire, unite and transform the world through sport and share in this excitement alongside all of Canada.”

Holding the title of Official Outfitter, lululemon will be designing all of Team Canada’s apparel and accessories for athletes, coaches, and Mission Team members.

You’ll be able to view the collections during the entirety of the Games which include the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, during the events, media opportunities, and everything in between.

It’s official! The Hudson’s Bay Company has partnered up with the Toronto Raptors for a multi-year deal.

HBC is now going to be the Official Style Partner of the NBA team.

The partnership is said to be four years long, so we can expect a ton of co-branding during the basketball season as well as ‘take-over’ nights in which Hudson’s Bay will host the Raptors home games at the arena.

There will also be a major emphasis on supporting the Hudson’s Bay Charter for Change, an HBC Foundation initiative which works with partner organizations including MLSE Foundation

Now for the even more exciting part. There will be an exclusive product collab line that’ll offer collector-worthy pieces, in which net proceeds will go towards Hudson’s Bay Charter for Change. We can’t wait to see it!

Allison Litzinger, VP Brand at Hudson’s Bay Company, spoke about the partnership in a release saying, “We are excited to team up with these renowned organizations that encourage the expression of style and experiences, align with our values and The Bay’s brand mission to help Canadians live a colourful life. This partnership will continue to create discovery and delight for all The Bay has to offer, especially for Raptors fans across the country. It’s a true super team.”

We’ve seen a lot of changes at HBC throughout the last year, with some locations closing and even Topshop leaving its stores. Now, Hudson’s Bay is separating its physical shops from its shopping site.

HBC has now launched ‘The Bay’ as its brand new online shopping experience.

The Bay site shows off a chic look with darker, solid colours. It still has all of our fave categories to browse, which include the Designer section where you’ll find pieces by Ganni, Oscar de la Renta, Moschino, and more.

It also still has its awesome sale tab that has great deals for men, women, kids, and home goods.

Plus, shop through the clearance and score some deep savings.

The U.K. fashion brand Topshop and Topman has confirmed that it will be leaving all Hudson’s Bay stores across Canada this fall, by September 30.

Since opening in Spring of 2011, Topshop has been a trendy fashion staple inside of HBC stores.

Arcadia Group, the Topshop owner, went into bankruptcy protection back in November 2020. Luckily, they were then acquired by online-based U.K. retailer ASOS this past February. ASOS apparently plans to move the entire Topshop brand onto its beloved e-commerce platform.

Topshop was originally available in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, as well as the United States.

As of 2019, the brand’s US division filed for bankruptcy which led to all of its stores closing down operations.

Instagram/@topshopcanada

HBC explained how the company will continue to offer trendy brands, “Hudson’s Bay is growing its millennial and Gen Z offering through elevated brands and in-store experience. We have already introduced brands like Mango, Good American, Sweaty Betty, ALC, AFRM, and Ganni, and are working to launch dozens of new, relevant brands and are anticipating an incredibly compelling fall line-up.”

As for the employees of Topshop and Topman, those Canadians will be offered jobs elsewhere throughout the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Although we aren’t too surprised that Topshop is leaving Canada’s retail scene, we have to admit the brand experienced huge popularity before the last few years. Nevertheless, we can’t wait to see how HBC fills the void that will be left by its exit.
